18-year- old Hima Das from Assam Gives India its First World Gold Medal on Track

18-Year-Old Indian Athlete and a daughter of a rice farmer from Dhing village in Nagaon district Hima Das just won the first ever world level gold medal on track for India. The Assam based girls Hima Das created history on Thursday by winning the 400 meter final at the World U20 Championships in Tampere, Finland.

Hima Das started slow and trailed on the home spring, but her furious run in the final 80M lead her overtook three rivals. She took 51.46 seconds to complete her dream race, Hima finished ahead of heavyweights such as Andrea Miklos of Romania (52.07 seconds) and USA’s Taylor Manson (52.28 seconds).

As per the repots her coach Nipon Das, in Guwahati said.

“Her race begins in the final 80 metres. Her progress just shows how much potential she has. It has been just two years since she first wore spikes”.

With this historical performance, Hima marked her name in an elite club of Indian athletes who have won medals at the World U20 Championships including Seema Punia (bronze, discus), Navjeet Kaur Dhillon (bronze, discus) and Neeraj Chopra (gold, javelin). Among this list she is the only India athlete who won a medal in track event.

“Bringing a medal for the country is the biggest achievement and that is why I am very happy. I am very proud to give this gift to the people of India,”

Hima said after her victory in conversation with NDTV channel.
